Recently a friend sent me this link to an African-American movie trailer and was lamenting at how god-awful the film seemed. I clicked on the link with lowered expectations, but was surprised to find that really all it was was a Nigerian-style movie with higher production value, American accents, and without the juju!
I’m not saying it like this because I think Nigerian films are bad. With the kind of presence they have worldwide, its obvious that SOMEONE out there is loving them, right? They’re serving a purpose, speaking to a need that people have to see themselves (albeit in a very hyper, overdramatized way!) Could it be that African-American people have the same needs, just less familiar with juju and chicken sacrifices? And if so, does that make those films bad?
Tell me what YOU think!
